Diaries of Pioneer Women

May 1

Norma Libman

Educator, Journalist

What was it really like for a woman to journey west to a new life? The journey west was perilous and exciting. The journals kept by women pioneers provide details that enrich our understanding of the experience in a way that differs from and enhances the information we get from the writings of the men. The women prepared the meals, healed the sick, kept track of the children, counted the dead and the miles traveled, and drove the wagons if their husbands were lost along the way. In this lecture, Norma Libman examines the writings of women pioneers and reveals behind the scenes secrets of the settlement of the West. You will meet a group of hardy and dedicated women, some with familiar names and some you may not know yet.

Norma Libman is an educator and journalist who has published more than 500 articles in newspapers and other publications nationwide. She has degrees in education and literature and has done extensive research in the areas of women’s writings and their contributions to the preservation of their various cultures. She is also the author of three award winning books, excerpts of which can be read at her website:  www.normalibman.com
